Why the evaporator coil gets dirty

The evaporator coil sits inside your air handler, and every bit of air your AC moves passes through its thin metal fins. Because the coil is cold and wet while the system runs, dust that gets past the filter sticks to it. Over time it can form a mat across the coil face.

A dirty coil restricts airflow and makes it harder for the system to remove heat and humidity. Coil cleaning is one part of a full HVAC cleaning, and it’s often done together with blower wheel cleaning, since both affect how much air reaches your rooms.

    Clean the pan & check drainage

    The drain pan is cleaned and condensate flow is checked.

    Reassemble & verify

    Panels are sealed and the system is run to confirm normal operation.

What’s the difference between the evaporator coil and the condenser coil?

The evaporator coil is indoors, inside the air handler, and cools the air. The condenser coil is in the outdoor unit and releases heat outside. This service covers the indoor evaporator coil.

Can a dirty coil cause my AC to freeze?

A heavily restricted coil can contribute to freezing, but so can refrigerant and other mechanical problems. If your system is icing, have your HVAC service company check it as well.

How often should the evaporator coil be cleaned?

It depends on filter maintenance, run time and household dust. Many systems benefit from a coil cleaning every few years, or whenever buildup is visible.

Can I clean the coil myself?

Coil fins are thin and bend easily, and the coil sits close to electrical parts. Professional cleaning reduces the risk of damage.
