• Purix Air Duct & Dryer Vent Cleaning
The common rule of thumb is to have your air ducts professionally cleaned every 3 to 5 years. That guideline was written with typical U.S. homes in mind, though, and homes in Florida aren’t typical. In Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Naples and Cape Coral, the air conditioner runs for most of the year, which means more air, more dust and more moisture moving through your ductwork than in a home that only runs heat for a few months.
Here’s how to figure out the right schedule for your home.
Why Florida ducts get dirty faster
Every time your AC runs, it pulls air from your rooms into the return, across the filter and coil, and back out through the supply vents. Even with a good filter, fine dust, pet dander, pollen and fibers slip past and settle inside the ducts.
Florida adds two extra factors:
- Run time. Systems here can run nearly every day of the year, so the ducts simply move more air.
- Humidity. Warm, humid air and cold surfaces create condensation on the coil, drain pan and sometimes the ducts themselves. Dust that stays damp can hold odors, which is one reason musty AC smells are common in South Florida. The wet AC components often need cleaning too; see HVAC cleaning.
When to clean sooner than 3 to 5 years
Consider scheduling a cleaning sooner if any of these apply:
- You have pets that shed
- Someone in the home has allergies or asthma
- You recently renovated or did drywall, flooring or attic work
- You moved into a home and don’t know when the ducts were last cleaned
- The home sat closed up for a season
- There was a water leak, flood or storm damage
- You smell something musty when the AC turns on
Signs your air ducts need cleaning now
You don’t have to wait for a calendar reminder. These are signs the ducts need attention:
- Dust settles on furniture again within a day or two of cleaning
- Dark streaks or dust around the supply vents
- Weak or uneven airflow between rooms
- A stale or musty smell from the vents
- Visible debris when you remove a return grille
What about dryer vents?
Dryer vents are on a much shorter schedule. Most should be cleaned at least once a year, and more often for large households or long and roof-terminated vents. Read more about our dryer vent cleaning service.
