Your dryer’s lint trap catches a lot, but not everything. The lint that gets past it ends up in the vent line running through your wall, attic or roof. Over months of laundry, that lint builds up, narrows the vent, and traps hot, moist air inside the dryer.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, failure to clean is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires. A clogged vent also wastes energy and wears out your dryer faster. Here are the warning signs to watch for.

1. Clothes take more than one cycle to dry

This is the most common sign. If a normal load that used to dry in one cycle now needs two, moist air isn’t escaping the way it should.

2. The dryer is hot to the touch

When the vent is restricted, heat stays in the dryer cabinet. If the top of the dryer or the clothes themselves are unusually hot, the vent is likely blocked.

3. The laundry room feels hot or humid

Hot, humid air that can’t leave through the vent leaks into the room instead.

4. You smell something burning

A burning smell while the dryer runs is a serious warning sign. Lint near the heating element can scorch. Stop using the dryer and have the vent inspected.

5. There’s lint around the dryer door or behind the dryer

Lint that can’t get out through the vent gets pushed back out wherever it can.

6. The outside vent flap barely opens

Go outside while the dryer is running. You should feel strong, warm airflow and see the flap open wide. Weak airflow means a restriction somewhere in the line.

7. It’s been more than a year

Most dryer vents should be professionally cleaned at least once a year. Long runs, roof vents, big families and pets all mean more frequent cleaning.

Roof and condo dryer vents clog faster

Many Florida homes and condos vent the dryer through the roof or through long attic or vertical runs. Lint has farther to travel and gravity works against it, so these vents clog faster and are harder to reach. They’re also the vents homeowners are least likely to clean themselves.
